Sony A7iii for Real Estate Photography
The Sony a7iii is easily one of the most popular mirrorless camera choices on the market today. It’s also common to see professionals using the Sony a7iii for real estate photography.
Personally, I’m a Nikon shooter. I have, however, used the Sony a7iii for real estate photography a handful of times since I’ve worked with Sony shooters before, and I have to say, there is a lot to love about it.
I commonly recommend the Sony a7iii to new/beginner photographers that are either looking to buy their first camera or upgrade to a professional quality one. It’s such a functional and versatile camera, so it’s easy to recommend.
Even though we named the Sony a7R IV top choice in our article Best Sony Cameras for Real Estate Photography, we only have it slightly above the Sony a7iii since the a7R IV is more expensive.
Here are the pros and cons of using a Sony a7iii for real estate photography.
Pros of the Sony a7iii for Real Estate Photography
There are 2 major pros when considering the Sony a7iii for real estate photography:
- The price to quality ratio
- It’s excellent video capabilities
Price vs Quality Ratio
In my opinion, the price to quality ratio of the Sony a7iii is only rivaled by maybe the Nikon D750.
(You can read more about the Nikon D750 here)
It’s one of the more affordable mirrorless cameras on the market and doesn’t really lack too much in image quality. Cameras can be very expensive, so it’s always welcomed to see cameras like this find a great price to quality balance.
The Sony a7iii has 24 megapixels, which is great for real estate photography, and it produces quality images. It has a very solid battery life and is extremely adaptable to other genres of photography as well.
Video Capabilities
That leads to the second major pro of the Sony a7iii, it’s video capabilities. The Sony a7iii is extremely popular amongst videographers. Its 4k ability coupled with its very light weight are an ideal combination.
I know real estate photographers that have a Sony a7iii dedicated only for real estate videos. This is an idea I was considering myself, but instead I opted to buy a Nikon Z7ii so I could continue using the same lenses I already own.
If you want a mirrorless camera that has the ability to shoot high quality videos, you really don’t need to look any further. Offering real estate videos is a great addition to any list of services and you can sell them at premium prices.
Cons of the Sony a7iii for Real estate photography
There are only two cons that I can think of when considering using the Sony a7iii for real estate photography, and the second one is a bit of a stretch:
- Menu functions are not very intuitive
- It’s not ideal for higher-end commercial photography
Menu Functions
The most common complaint that I hear about the Sony a7iii, and Sony cameras in general really, is that the menu functions are not intuitive and somewhat difficult to learn.
I consider this to be a con because adding in difficult to learn menu functions for a beginner real estate photographer can be extremely overwhelming. It’s already hard enough to grasp all the other aspects of real estate photography.
The difficulty level of what it takes to consider composition, lighting, settings, staging, and all the other little things that come with creating a great photo is massively amplified if you are having problems figuring out simple menu functions.
This could lead to someone that is brand new to photography quitting all together. With all that being said though, I’ve watched photographers use this cameras menu without any issues plenty of times.
This is one of those things where if you just stick with it and stay confident that with practice it’ll become second nature, you’ll end up not having an issue at all.
Higher End Commercial Photography
This one is a bit of a stretch, but it’s still something that you should consider. The Sony a7iii has 24 megapixels which is perfect for real estate photography. However, photographing commercial architecture will benefit from having more.
This is not to say that you can’t photograph higher-end real estate or commercial architecture with the Sony a7iii or any camera with 24 megapixels. You definitely can and you will be able to get some good shots no doubt.
However, large scale photography can be very labor intensive on the editing end, so the more pixels you have the work with, the better. If you plan to get into architectural photography, you might eventually want a camera more like the Sony a7R IV.
Recommendations
Purchasing the Sony a7iii for real estate photography is a great idea if you are in the market for a professional, mirrorless camera that’s a bit more affordable. It’s an especially good idea if you plan to offer real estate video services as well.
If you know that you won’t be offering video services that often and don’t care about DSLR vs Mirrorless cameras, then maybe you should opt for the Nikon D750. Honestly though, either camera will be excellent for real estate photography.
